This is the journal of teyla. I'm too young to be a fandom biddy and too old to be one of the kids on the lawn, so find me in the limbo of "I don't remember usenet but I do have six binders of printed fic in my basement". I keep most of my personal stuff locked; fannish stuff or posts without private info stay unlocked. I add back easily, so add away and we'll see if we click.

Other places you can find me:

Tumblr | Twitter | AO3

I'm also trying out Hubzilla but to be honest, I don't quite get it yet: Hubzilla

Fannish Activities:

Writing | Vidding | Icons | Art on Tumblr (mostly digital) | Art on DW (traditional) | Gifs

Fandoms:

King Falls AM (current) | The Thick of It | Doctor Who | Star Trek: TOS/AOS | Star Trek: ENT | House MD

... and many more.

Ultimate Trope Showdown

I did the ultimate trope showdown!

1 Enemies to Friends to Lovers
2 They Break Up (but then They Get Back Together)
3 Seemingly Unrequited Pining
4 Hurt/Comfort
5 Snowed-In Cabin/Isolated Together For Extended Period of Time
6 Pride and Prejudice AU
7 Amnesia Fic

No real surprises there. All the tropes with people being hella antagonistic but also horny for each other and possibly in love go up top, middle ground is where all the fluff ends up, and everything supernatural-y comes after. Kind of surprised that "Actually Unrequited Pining" isn't higher up in the list, but then, I do like a happy ending. :D

Fic: Big Cities Never Get Dark

Title: Big Cities Never Get Dark
Fandom: King Falls AM
Rating: NC-17
Word Count: 42,900
Characters/Pairing: Ben Arnold/Sammy Stevens, Jack Wright

Notes: [personal profile] neery reblogged this with the note "King Falls AM is a Night-Vale-esque podcast about a radio show in a town full of supernatural craziness. This is a lovely fic about two people fighting through their issues and taking care of each other along the way." which I thought is a great summary for people who don't know this fandom (which is most people, sadly enough). It's still readable, even if you don't know canon! At least in the way most fics are.

Notes 2: I'm posting in chapters with updates twice a week. As of now, Chapter 1 is up. Chapter 2 will go up on Monday.

When you lose yourself, it’s impossible to predict where your life’s going to be when you come back around.

Canon-divergent after Episode 75: The Ben Arnold Show

Past Sammy Stevens/Jack Wright, Minor Ben Arnold/Emily Potter, Break Up, Suicidal Character, Canonical Suicide Attempt, Depression, Angst, Emotionally Repressed, Emotionally Volatile, Bad Communication, Endgame Ben Arnold/Sammy Stevens, this fic has jokes and cute moments too i promise, Eventual Happy Ending, Post-Episode: e075 The Ben Arnold Show

Fandom: King Falls AM
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 11,475

Notes: Written for the person who's to blame that I'm writing in this fandom at all. Yeah, you know who you are.

During blizzard season, Ben and Sammy each for their own reasons make an unwise choice. The experience that ensues should be life changing—though is it?

Car Accidents, Injury, Mild Hurt/Comfort, Closeted Character, could be read as, Mutual Pining

Christmas Update

teyla: Cartoon Ten typing on top of the TARDIS like Snoopy. (Default)
So everyone is migrating back to Dreamwidth, which means that I remembered that I have one, too. I hate that I'm such a flake about social media attendance--I do this on all platforms at this point, though, so maybe I just need to accept I'm not going to make more than three posts a year. Sorry, readers. :/

Anyway. How has everyone been? I have a couple new people in my circle--come in and say hi!

Things I've been messing around with the past couple weeks:

1) Distributed Fandom

2) Possible New Job

3) New Fandom~

There's other stuff going on, of course, like Christmas and the new season of The Good Place and the fact that I still need to clean my apartment, ahem. I also bought a domain and want to set up a proper website for myself again, because the demise of Tumblr reminded me that you can't trust them to host your art or gifs (or vids, for that matter). What's your experience with this, fandom folk--would you set up a Wordpress backend or just code it from scratch? Both has its own appeal. I shall ponder.

Anyway, happy holidays everyone, and if you feel like it, let me know what you've been up to. :D

Whenever I go to Dreamwidth and scroll through it, I remember that I like it so much better than Tumblr, so here I am, back again. How have you guys all been?

Infinity War spoilers underneath. )

In other exciting news, I'm going to Vividcon this year! Has anyone been? Did you enjoy? I'm so looking forward to it. :D

Yuletide Letter 2017

teyla: Cartoon Ten typing on top of the TARDIS like Snoopy. ([dw] ten snoopy)
Dear Yuletide Author,

First of all, thank you for doing this! Yuletide is the best fannish time of the year, and it wouldn't be as awesome as it is without folks like you offering to write in tiny fandoms that nobody else wants to write in. So yay! :D

As for my wishes and tastes, please don't stress. I am in this at least as much for the writing as I am in it for the receiving. I'd rather you write what you want and feel good about than torture yourself over sticking to every letter of my prompt. I'll give you a general outline of things that I like, and (hopefully inspirational) prompts for each fandom, but if you've got a different idea that you're passionate about, please ignore me and run with it!

More under the cut. )

That's it! I hope I've been able to give you something to work with. Once again, if you've already got an idea, forget what I said and run with it. Have fun! And thanks again. <3

Fic: Take Me to Fucking Church

Word Count: 50,204
Summary: Having a relationship with Malcolm is difficult, difficult, lemon-difficult. So is growing up poor in Glasgow, being gay in the eighties, and rebranding a major political party. Jamie and Malcolm take a rough three decades to figure it all out, but in the end, it’s the journey that matters. Right?
AN: Here it is, guys. I'll be posting in weekly installments; this is the first chapter. Have fun, should you decide to read!

The Ultimate Malcolm and Jamie Novel

teyla: Cartoon Ten typing on top of the TARDIS like Snoopy. ([ttoi] silly tucker)
I finished my fiiiiiiiiiiiiic. :D :D :D

51,256 words. It's in beta now (poor [personal profile] topaz_eyes and [personal profile] neery). I can't wait to post. I've never been this excited about a fic. I got up at 6:30 every day the past couple of weeks so I'd be able to write for an hour before work. THAT'S HOW EXCITED I AM. :D

I will make another post later with some other updates (my new job, the zoo, that sort of thing) but I feel like finishing this fic deserves its own post. Longest fic I've ever written! :D

Look at my research post; it's taken on terrifying dimensions since I posted it.

I'm thinking about posting in chapters. There are eight chapters of roughly six- to eight thousand words, and I could post them in weekly installments. That's still a sizeable amount of words per week, and I might get some more traction in this tiny, tiny fandom (which is mainly on tumblr, sadly enough) if I drag out the posting process a little. I don't feel too bad about it when I've got the fic already finished. At least I can guarantee folks that it will be completed.

So, yeah. Watch this space! I'll definitely post a link here, too.

All right, so as of now, there will be no more crossposting to LJ. One of these days, I will go through my LJ and delete all my extremely personal crap. Everything else will stay up. All my content has been imported to DW, so I'm not losing anything. I feel good about this way of handling it, so yay. Thanks to everyone who gave input!

I've been talking to [personal profile] tinny about icons, and because I was stuck on my fic, and quite enjoyed the new Doctor Who episode, I made some 10x01 icons.

Under the cut. )

Crit, feedback, comments, all welcome!

Has anyone been watching Line of Duty? I'm mostly watching it for Paul Higgins, who played Jamie on The Thick of It. His English accent is painful. He's trying so hard, but as someone on my dash on Tumblr said, it's like watching undercover Jamie acting like he imagines Englishmen act. His character on Line of Duty is an UTTER CREEP, though, so I'm having some discomfiting dissonance with how much I love Jamie and how much I hate ... I think his name is Hilton? ACC Hilton. Blech.

Thandie Newton is playing the lead, though, and she's great. I had a huge crush on her back when she was playing Dr. Carter's girlfriend on ER. Her character on Line of Duty is a bit shady, but man, I know where my sympathies lie. Everyone else on that show is even more of a creep. Oh, gritty British crime shows.

That Jamie/Malcolm Fic

teyla: Cartoon Ten typing on top of the TARDIS like Snoopy. (Default)
Oh God.

Turns out I was wrong in my last post. I wasn't past the midpoint in my fic; I am now, and the slump is a BAD ONE. Also I passed the midpoint at ~17k words, which means the fic will not be a reasonable ~20k, but more a very UNREASONABLE 35k to 40k. WHY.

I wish I were better at outlining. My structure/ pacing usually works once my fic is done, but I cannot outline for the life of me. If I try, I will inevitably veer off the outline on plot point one at the very latest. And then I end up writing whatever feels right, until I hit the midpoint, and then I flail and cringe and force myself to keep writing, until I hit plot point two. I know I will eventually, and then it'll get easier again, but it's so hard to get through that middle part. Especially when you don't know if you're on the right track. I don't know what plot point two is going to be, so I don't know a) if I'm writing the right thing to get there, and b) how much I have left to write until I hit it. It's so exhausting.

Of course, this would be made easier if I knew what my second plot point were, and what needs to happen between it and the midpoint. It doesn't seem like it should be that hard to figure out, but for some reason, my brain just goes blank if I try to plot it out. It's as if part of me is convinced that I can't know until I've written everything leading up to it. This makes no sense, brain. Stop being difficult.

How does it work for you guys? Do you outline? Do you then stick to your outline/ abandon it? Do you just write whatever feels right? Do you have to fix a lot of pacing in your editing?

Inquiring minds want to know.

The GF and I just marathoned the entirety of Doctor Who season 9 today, and I am so invested. SO INVESTED. How did this happen? Did they give Moffat a brain transplant? Did someone ghostwrite all of his episodes? HOW? WHAT? I don't understand but I certainly approve!

Spoilers under the cut. )

I'm very much looking forward to meeting the new companion. She seems fun! Man, the new season is coming out soon, and I'm actually excited. Such a strange feeling to be getting back into this show after so long ...

Snowflake Challenge - Day 1

teyla: Cartoon Ten typing on top of the TARDIS like Snoopy. (Default)
Bit late to the game, but here I go with post one of the Snowflake Challenge!

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator.

I posted links to a few of my recent fanworks in my last post already, so forgive me for including two of those works in this rec. They're my most recent, and therefore the ones I'm proudest of at the moment.

1) FANFIC: Jessica Jones Femslash

I'm including this because it's my first femslash fic and I found it quite freeing to write. It was nice to tell a story about awesome women for a change.

Title: Proxemics
Fandom: Jessica Jones (TV)
Rating: PG
Pairing: Jessica Jones/Trish Walker
Word Count: 14,833
Summary: Proxemics: the study of personal space. In which the aftermath of Kilgrave’s death prompts Trish and Jess to redefine some boundaries.
AO3 Tags: Post-Season/Series 01, Self-Worth Issues, Self-Destructive Behavior, Trauma, Recovery, Canon-compliant portrayal of PTSD, some hurt/comfort and some pining but mostly ladies being awesome and overcoming shit, plus a lot of lesbians, explicit and non-explicit, trust me all non-explicit lesbians are in fact lesbians, and of course there’s a happy ending because yuletide

2) FANVID: Ten/Simm!Master Time Lord Angst

Ten/Simm!Master will remain my forever OTP. I know fandom opinions divided on End of Time, but I love those episodes with all my heart. Time Lords are ridiculous.

Title: Weapon
Fandom: Doctor Who
Pairing: Tenth Doctor/Simm!Master
Summary: The Master was Rassilon's last weapon in the Time War, but it backfired.

Vimeo stream under the cut. )

3) FANART: Holmes/Watson Crossdressing

This is very recent and was a quick one-off more than anything, but I quite like the way it turned out, and it did not get a lot of attention on Tumblr, so I'm sharing it here. Besides, Holmes/Watson in any incarnation are always appropriate.

Fandom: Guy Ritchie!Holmes
Medium: Digital art, Photoshop CS5 and Wacom tablet, pencil and watercolor brushes

I'm so fed up with Tumblr, so I'm trying a renewed attempt at returning to LJ. :D?

Who's still active here? My reading list has a few recent updates, so it doesn't seem to be a complete wasteland ... what is everyone up to?

Role Play Activity

teyla: Cartoon Ten typing on top of the TARDIS like Snoopy. (Default)
Somewhere for me to keep track of my role play activity that happens off-muse-journal. Most of these are [livejournal.com profile] dear_mun posts, with some [livejournal.com profile] sixwordstories and [livejournal.com profile] dear_multiverse posts sprinkled in. Also logged are comm participations.

I tried to find all posts I made before the creation of this list (on 11/12/2011), but I'm fairly sure I didn't get them all. I will attempt to log all posts I make from now on.

Feel free to tag into any open post, no matter how old, if you are so inclined. Feel free to track this post, or, if you have a paid account, track the threads of specific muses you'd like to follow. I'm not a particularly active RPer, so even if you track this entire post, I doubt you'd get your inbox spammed too badly.
