Layouting

I maded a new icon! And a new header, and a whole new layout. I don't really know what to do with it though. I just wrote it because I had made the header and needed a layout to make it complete.

In case you want to take a look, there's a screenshot under the cut. If you're interested in using the layout for your journal, comment and tell me, and I'll customize it for you :).







Oh, and - have you seen what LJ did to the customization area? OMG chaos! Plz 2 be switching it back to old system!

I had a look on the Customization Area and now I'm totally confused.

I also hope as you that they will switch back to the old system. The new one is just so chaotic like my kitchen...

The new customization area is meant to look like the one at Vox and probably other sites Six Apart owns. So it's likely here to stay.

I always thought it seemed silly, as if people needed to be oh-so-carefully walked through the process of not making their journals look like crap.

It's the Microsoft syndrome. Usually, I'm all for designing programs for the DAU (= "duemmster anzunehmender User", meaning "stupidest user imaginable"), but Microsoft programmers tend to not only assume I'm stupid, but they try to guess what I'll be most likely to want my program to do and then program their software in a way that it's almost impossible to get the program to do something else.

Same thing with all these flash and javascript user interfaces. The user doesn't get to see the workings behind the device anymore, and all they can do is use trial and error to get what they want. It's insanely annoying.

yes, and yes about the customization area. it sucks big time!

but yays about the layout. I already know the header, but still. YAYs :-)

Hey I nabbed your layout for my journal but it doesn't quite look right on mine. Can you give me any insight about why it isn't?

Hm, from what I can see it looks the way it's supposed to look - you have turned off the option to show anything in the sidebar, userpic or tags or calender or whatever. That's where the empty space on the left comes from. You can change that under Journal => Customize Journal => Customize Your Theme => Sidebar. Or, if you don't want anything in the sidebar, I can see if I can change the css to fit your needs.

If you were talking about something else, maybe you could send me a screenshot? The layout might to wonky things when viewed in Internet Explorer - I tried to adapt it so it wouldn't, but with IE, you never know ;).

See that's just it I don't have everything turned off in the sidebar option. It's on and I get zlich and I wanted everything except maybe mile long list of tags I have lol.

That is strange. I took a look at your source code, and there isn't even any code for the sidebar. Which means it's not a problem with the layout itself, because I can't make code disappear with css. The only thing I can think of is that you have the page setup set to "no sidebar". If you go to Journal => Customize Journal and scroll down to the bottom, there are three page setup options. The one in the middle - sidebar on the left - should be active.

Okay that did the trick. Thank you so much for the help in figuring this one out. I hate the new LJ customizing area and I think they should go back to what it was before.

Yeah, the new customizing area gave me a shock when I saw it the first time, and it's gotten only worse since then. Not that the old one was all that brilliant, but at least I knew where to find what, lol ;).
