people needed to be oh-so-carefully walked through the process of not making their journals look like crap It's the Microsoft syndrome. Usually, I'm all for designing programs for the DAU (= "duemmster anzunehmender User", meaning "stupidest user imaginable"), but Microsoft programmers tend to not only assume I'm stupid, but they try to guess what I'll be most likely to want my program to do and then program their software in a way that it's almost impossible to get the program to do something else.
Same thing with all these flash and javascript user interfaces. The user doesn't get to see the workings behind the device anymore, and all they can do is use trial and error to get what they want. It's insanely annoying.
