Vidding Year in Review

Are we doing vidding year in review? I'm doing vidding year in review!

Vid Round-up 2021

February
Ain't My Fault [Knives Out] (Festivids)
Chasing Cars [Lost Tomb Reunion] (Sundial Exchange)

March
Vexercises: The Lonely Shepherd/Bury a Friend [Sand Sea]

June
Snakes on a Plane [DMBJ] (VidUKon)

September
Choke [The Rebel] (Guardian Wishlist)

October
Bang! [DMBJ] (Fanworks)
9 to 5 [DMBJ] (Fanworks)

Total: Seven! One more than last, and highest-per-year since I started vidding. Being able to participate in the vidding community more by attending stuff virtually has definitely helped make me vid more.

Favorite video this year (of my own)
Ack, that's hard. I'm going to pick Bang! because I like rewatching it, and I enjoyed sifting through the shows and finding parallels, I like how it plays with meta commentary, and I am proud of managing to make something from all these different shows that somewhat holds together even for people who don't know Tombs.

Least favorite video
This one is always hard because if I genuinely didn't like a vid, I wouldn't have posted it. This year I guess the questionable award goes to 9 to 5, simply because I don't feel like I put much effort in. I don't think it needed it, it's just a jokey vid about a random side character, but it's certainly not the vid that I spent the most time and effort on this year.

Most successful video
As always, difficult to answer because different fandoms have a different sort of reach. After thorough math (each vid's kudos-, comments-, and bookmarks-per-hit ratios added up and divided by three), it seems that 9 to 5 is leading the ranks, which is quite funny. Then Ain't My Fault, which makes sense because Festivids, and then actually the Vexercises tied with Bang!. I dunno. Shrug emoji?

Video most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion
Hmmm possibly Snakes? It has a wide appeal because it's very easy to understand (there's lots of snakes!) and the song is a bandom callback, so it could probably have gotten more attention. But also I am quite happy with the attention it got, so that's neither here nor there.

Most fun video
Choke is quite fun, they're both so terrible. Also it was very easy and fun to make.

Video with the single sexiest moment
My vids don't tend to be super sexy, but I guess if that's what I'm looking for I'd again go for Choke because at least Chen Moqun checks out Lin Nansheng's ass.

Biggest vid fail
I listed the NiF vid I want to make here last year, and I will have to list it again because I still haven't made it, sob.

Hardest video to make
The Vexercises! The guidelines said to use clips that were each six seconds long, and that's too long for a clip, sob. Also I couldn't adjust it to the music and the beat and ack, the brain did not enjoy that process. I quite like the end result, but working with a set clip length is awful.

Most unintentionally telling video
Uuuh maybe not a single vid and just the fact that I was gonna be a versatile, well-rounded vidder this year and instead made five DMBJ vids. Oops? I like Tombs, what can I say.

Things I learned this year

* I like to cut on off-beat beats and have a gesture or movement on the actual beat
* How to use music streaming platforms to look for vid songs
* Not every vid idea that sounds cool will be fun to vid
* Better to not clip and accept that I might miss the perfect clip than to never vid at all because I don't want to clip
* I want to know more about how vidders choose when to cut, because everyone does it according to a different system, and I'd like to know how much is intuition as opposed to conscious choice

My vidding goals from last year
Sob, I had the goal to make the NiF vid and I didn't. Oh well.

Goals for 2022
I'll call these "vague plans" rather than goals because I'm not good with goals.

* Vid what is fun to vid because it's fun
* Push myself but only when it feels good to do so
* Make something I'm proud of
* Make the Z1L vid idea I had; it will be a horrible clipping process but the end result will (hopefully) be hilarious

Bang! is also my favourite because it just works so well and I really like how you hit the beats with it (well, also, Wu Xie ;)

Make the Z1L vid idea I had; it will be a horrible clipping process but the end result will (hopefully) be hilarious

Super looking forward to this! It's going to be great!

Yay, thanks for listing them all again in one place! I haven't seen them all (mostly because spoilers but also because I suck at actually looking at vids, my brain always goes "but video takes so much tiiiiiime"), so I'll take this opportunity to actually watch them.

* Vid what is fun to vid because it's fun
* Push myself but only when it feels good to do so

Those are great plans!

Teyla we know each other only glancingly/the tiniest bit but I just want to say never feel badly about making DMBJ vids because I know I'm not the only one who adores them all (tho I'm quite certain I'm responsible for at least half the views on the Chasing Cars/Reboot one, to say nothing of the others). You are such an artist, and we are grateful. Thank you thank you for all your hard work.
