Why so fail, LJ?

This is probably the seven hundredth post of this kind on your f-list, but just on the off-chance anyone hasn't seen it yet... the new profile page is live, and it's extraordinarily fugly. Also, there is no opt-out option, which means you can't make the fugly go away.

If you disapprove, go here and bitch at LJ to let them know that this is really not okay.

I had no idea this was happening, but wow, you're right, it is super fugly. Sadface. Unfortunately, internet petitions are about as useless as something very, very useless.

Wow. That "design" looks like something from the early days of the Web. It's really the antithesis of good design. Totally fugly!

Just saw this after posting my own rant - that banner-thing looks like a fun idea, but I'm too lazy to turn my browsers upside down to find an "old" profile page so I can copy what I want from it properly into a 'profile post'. I'll just hang back, hack every time I see a profile page, and cheer you all from the sidelines. But I will sign that petition, with bells on.

Geez, and after *everyone* told them that the beta version was uglier fuck, they still took it on. Of course they did, they're lj, after all. *headdesk*

Well, I just c&p'ed the bio HTML from my profile into this post. If anyone wants the rest of the info, they'll have to use the fugly new profile until either LJ changes it back or until I find the time and energy to hunt down the code for the old profile xD.

You know, I didn't know that they were not going to give us an opt-out. I saw the beta thing, went eeeewww, checked the [livejournal.com profile] lj_design posts, and when they said there was going to be an opt-out, I shrugged and figured if they want to add another useless feature to LJ, they could go right ahead and do so. Well, I figured wrong, apparently. Thanks for this, LJ. Sigh.

They did actually say there would be an opt-out? And then they turned around and said "sorry no can do"? In spite of buying in enough servers to run the SGC? Fail.

Idk, it's what I remember. Maybe I mistook 'there's probably going to be an opt-out' for 'there's certainly going to be an opt-out', but they didn't actually tell anyone that this profile was going to be the definite enforced default until they let it go live.

Indeed so. When I tried the beta version I clicked away from it v. quickly. I did not expect to see it on my own LJ thereafter without warning.

By the way. I know you have a paid account as well, so you may not have seen this. I discovered it when I viewed the profile of a plus account while I was logged out:

There were ads in the "Basic Info" section, i.e. a section that is often rather useless for people. ("Name," birthdate, contact info, schools.) I tried collapsing the "Basic Info" section to make the "Bio" section more visible.

No can do. I mean, yes, the actual INFORMATION in the section collapses. But the ads? Do not, of course. Which means that collapsing that section does nothing in terms of physical space. It just hides the info. And the ads (which in this case probably took up 20 times more space than the actual info) still push the bio down the page.

Not that we didn't have to scroll past ads before (for people who aren't paid). But now we have collapsible sections, and the ads are positioned so as to make that effort useless in a prominent spot.


...Took me a few minutes to come to terms with that level of epic fail last night, so I needed to share that with someone.

That is... a lot of fail. The ads on the old profile, if I remember correctly, were positioned on the top right. They were annoying, but didn't really take up any actual space that you would have had to scroll past.

Oh LJ. When will you ever learn? Just get rid of these terrible profiles already; nobody wants them.
