Peter and Natalie

I just rewatched Blackpool. It's still as awesome as I remember, and I know I promised someone a pimping post, which I'll probably be posting in the next couple of days. However, for now I have a question for everyone who's already seen it.

I love Peter Carlisle, and every time I watch Blackpool, I'm rooting for him to get the girl. But when I think about it, I don't think he actually deserves her. He's a creepy, messed up bastard, just the same as Ripley, only that he conceals it with big brown bambi eyes and a good way with words. I mean, I'd go for him, no questions asked, but I'm not like Natalie. I'm not a good person, not in the sense that I put other people first. Natalie always puts others first, and with Carlisle, she's stumbling into the same trap she ended up in with Ripley. I don't know if she's learned how to protect herself from people like Ripley and Carlisle, so even though I smile and clap my hands together in glee when they finally get together, I don't think it'll end well. Carlisle loves her, I've no doubt about that, but it's in his nature to walk over any- and everyone else to get what he wants, and I don't think that's something people can change about themselves.

The future I see for Carlisle and Natalie is either a stuck-in-a-rut marriage or Carlisle leaving Natalie. Natalie would not leave Carlisle, she's proved that she doesn't back out of a commitment like marriage. The third option, of course, would be Natalie dying, which is the one I usually go for in my head, because it's still the most romantic one. (Because secretly, I totally am a romantic. Oh yes.)

So, am I completely off in my assessment? What's your take on Peter's and Natalie's future?

I am actually of exactly the same opinion of yours. I *love* Carlisle - largely 'cause he's brill - but I don't half wish to punch him in the eye sometimes. :P

He would be terrible with Natalie - for precisely the reasons you've outlined - but he does love her and she does (well, at least *thinks* she does) love him so I really want them to work out.

Mostly I had them (pre- Who S4) married together in Pete's World 'til the Cybermen killed Natalie.

Then Carlisle was sad.

Then he was 'shipped with Rose. Or Ripley. Or Mickey. Or Pete 'n Jackie. Or...

I'm sure you get the picture. :P

*ends comment of insanity now*

*sheepishly hides*

Oh, incidently, where can I download your mood theme? I simply adore it. :)

*runs away now*

I didn't like Carlisle all that much. Yeah, he was charming and you can see why Natalie would swoon in his arms, but I could never quite get over the fact that he encouraged her to commit adultery, lied to her about his identity, and tried very hard to put her husband in prison. That's... not a good basis for a relationship. I was quite surprised when they ended up together so romantically. I can't see it lasting.

Carlisle got a little fixated later on, but he did take himself off the case at that point.

So fixated that he actually attempted to fake evidence against Ripley. I lost some respect for him there. And Carlisle was going behind Ripley's back with the affair too, which was very unprofessional of him. Hey, Ripley, I'm here to do my best to get you in jail and while I'm at it, I'm going to run off with your wife too! He really tried to screw Ripley over. The only reason we root for Carlisle at all is that Ripley is even more of a bastard in comparison.

The other thing about Carlisle's relationship with Natalie, apart from the lying, is that it does come across as a bit creepy-stalkerish. He seems to get obsessed with her almost instantly. I don't know where they're going to find a basis for a strong relationship, because all they seemed to have was strong sexual attraction, and once the lust fades, what's left?

I agree about Carlisle. I don't know about their future together at all, but yeah-- I do see it is a bit of a disaster waiting to happen, because he is going to fuck her over. I believe he would leave her at some point down the road, his eye caught by someone else. I would allow that he loves her now but that he would love someone else just as easily and just as passionately, and clearly obsessedly, as he does her and that she'd be left in a ditch by the roadside (figuratively, I think) and would probably end up crawling back to Ripley. I don't see her as a very strong, independent person, just one of those women who will always hang on some guy's arm.
