If I had three wishes...

A few days ago, bzzinglikeneon posted two pictures of David Tennant and John Simm, and ever since I've seen them, I can't get this thought out of my head that I want to see the two of them in a production of Jesus Christ Superstar.






So David would be Jesus, and John would be Judas. The musical would start with John all on his own, brooding, singing about how he's starting to have doubts about this mission David Jesus is so obsessed with, and that he's worried they might be heading for a disaster.

Later on, we would see Judas before the high council of Jerusalem, desperate and torn, not knowing what is right and wrong anymore, accepting the pieces of silver in the end because it's the only thing he feels he can do to make things turn out for the best.

Then we would witness the confrontation during the last supper, Judas breaking down and losing his temper. Things would escalate in the garden of Gethsemane and later on in the palace of Pilatus, and then we'd get John being Judas, desperate and broken because he has betrayed the man he loved and admired for the last decade, finally committing suicide and ending up as the man who will stand as the symbol for all the sin and terror in the world for thousands of years to come.

I so want to see this production. Want want want. So badly.

Also, I can't get over how weird John Simm looks with facial hair. And longer hair. He's a whole new person, but just as sexy.

I APPROVE THIS MESSAGE.

Although when I first saw those pictures, I thought David=Judas and John=Jesus. Dark!Jesus really suits the theme of JCSS, plus David would give a sympathetic side to Judas that I think Weber was really going for.

Also, just imagine John as Jesus, watching him lose his hope for humanity little by little. Especially during the Temple scene when he sees all the sins of the merchants and people and he becomes furious.

Then of course when he gets confronted by the mob of lepers and beggars, all wanting to be healed, but he becomes overwhelmed (nearly drowning in them) and tells them to heal themselves... oh man. Dark!Jesus for the win.

Hells yes. Either way, really, I think it's a fandom dream for the ages.

Ohh, but David is much more the good guy of those two! Judas isn't supposed to be the bad guy in JCS, but he's supposed to be the guy people can relate to, because he has weaknesses and insecurities just like anyone. That's John, I think he'd be brilliant being the guy who ended up being the bad guy without wanting to.

Jesus, on the other hand, is this unreachable ideal of humility, purity and martyrdom, which I think David could pull off way better than John. He's got this certain, how should I call it - the same thing the Doctor has, too. This air of being a better person than anybody else without being an asshole about it.

Besides, this picture of John Simm just about screams JUDAS at me (and that's something positive, because ever since I first listened to JCS, I think Judas is by far the most interesting and fascinating character in the whole new testament).

Haha, don't get me going about this. If I had the means to do so, I would totally put together this production in a heartbeat and harass David and John into accepting the roles of Jesus and Judas. It's just perfect, if you ask me.

I agree with your role reversal. I'm not a big superfan of JCS or anything, although I do have the DVD and enjoyed the movie, but Ted Neeley is arguably the hottest Jesus EVER.

*jawdrop* I'm not the slightest bit familiar with this show, and only vaguely familiar with the story, but the way you've described it, it's like...they sound like they would both be PERFECT.

And I agree too about David = Jesus, John = Judas. There's some good arguments above, but the idea of Judas needing to be the relatable one is what really sold me.

I'm not even joking when I say we need to put this idea out to stew in the public conscious somehow. Some producer needs to pluck this idea up and make it happen. I don't even say this for selfish reasons, since I'd never get to see it. It just should totally happen.

Personally I think this is a brilliant idea. I was once in a (v.small not noteworthy) production of JCS and I can say that you really get an intimate feel for all of the characters.. adn that by the end of the run you can do everyone's part. So I think that for 1/2the run david=jesus john=judas and the other half they could switch john=jesus david=judas. I think that would give it even more edge.

I've actually written a totally gay plot synopsis for my fantasy production. It's gayer than Torchwood. And the beauty of it is that it's not very different from the original.
