Yes, more Doctor Who layout. This time, it's the Master and the Doctor.

Here you can find instructions how to install the layout on your LJ.

The layout is based on the Flexible Squares theme and should run smoothly on paid and basic accounts. I haven't tested plus accounts. If you run into any trouble, you're very welcome to contact me.

The layout is optimized for Mozilla Firefox, but should be bug-free in all other browsers. If not, please let me know!

I noticed that if you view the layout in Internet Explorer, the header is off. Gah.

I've changed a few things in the style.css file; it should work now. You can download it here.

Calling Layout expert...

I'm sick of my layout, and I don't seem to be able to find one that I like in the LJ offerings so I'd like to design one of my own. I remember from past conversations that writing layouts is concerned with CSS. Is it particular parts of CSS that I need to look at, or the whole thing? I'm wondering wehther I can find a web tutorial, or whether I should buy a book.

I like your new one, btw, but I experienced quite a significant pang at the realisation that you're in the process of moving on to fandom pastures new :(

Uh, it's not really specifics you need to check out. What you do when you write an LJ layout:

1) you pick a theme. For my current LJ layout, I'm using the Bloggish theme, this Master/Doctor one uses Flexible Squares and my old one was based on Smooth Sailing. Those are the only three I've ever worked with. Some themes are completely useless as far as css customization is concerned. Smooth Sailing is, in my opinion, the one that makes customization easiest, while Flexible Squares has the better structure. The Bloggish theme isn't really brilliant, but it was the only one that did what I wanted, so I used it. You'll have to look at the sources and decide depending on what you want to do.

2) You copy and paste the source codes of the theme you picked - journal source code, custom comment page source code, friends list and calender.

3) You go over the source code and figure out the structure it's using and what your classes and id's are called.

4) You write your style sheet.

It can be a bit tiresome, because you can't change anything about the source code and sometimes will have to find css solutions for things that could be solved with a simple alternation to the html code. I find it's fun, though ;).

Where to learn css - hmm. I learned it by looking at style sheets. It's pretty easy, actually - it's logical. As it happens, just today I put together a rough guide to css for tli. If you're interested, you can find it here.

I wouldn't invest in a book, but then, I've never been very good with learning from books. If you think it would help you, go for it! :)

I know :(. I'm not really ready to leave House yet - at least I don't think I am - but somehow, at the moment, the thrill just isn't there. The show isn't as clever as it used to be; somehow, season 4 feels as if they're holding it together with some cello tape and gum. And they're completely ignoring Wilson after giving him all that character development build-up in the end of s3, which really irks me. Also, I'm not too fond of the whole pick-a-duckling arc. It's getting rather tiresome. The House/Wilson scenes don't have that underlying tension anymore, either. It feels like they're just going through the motions.

I'm hoping the show will pick up again. Maybe I just need a bit of air after all that House/Wilson craziness ;).

A bigger issue for me is really the fandom itself. House fandom is so wanky, it has such an unhealthy atmosphere. I'm not pointing any fingers, not at all. It's a general thing. And it's much harder to change than the thing about the show not being all that brilliant anymore.

Anyway. You should check out Doctor Who! You said you know the old show - have you watched some of the New Who? It's really brilliant television.

For me, of course there's the additional attraction of a ton of mostly good-looking guys with HOMG BRITISH ACCENTS! You British women don't even know what you have there. There's nothing sexier than a British accent (except maybe a Scottish accent ;D).

The expression "British accent" is a collective noun for all the accents spoken in Britland. If I want to specify, I'm gonna start to distinguish. For now, I'm going with "guy with British accent = teh smex" ;).

Besides, Tennant's weird mixture of Scottish and whatever he's trying to sound like is the best ever, anyway. AND THAT'S NOT EVEN A REAL ACCENT! THERE! NOW YOU HAVE IT! ;)

I know that England isn't Britain. I KNOW. I was the one in school who wouldn't let England count as a proper country when we were playing that city-country-river game.
