Whut! Back :)

Hello everybody. Sorry that I've been sort of quiet and lurking the last couple of days - I was at my parents' and I was making my square for the House quilt project, and I was watching X-Files. If I still owe you comments, I apologize. I will probably get around to it more sooner than later :).

House quilt square: Yes, I finished it! Picture is under the cut.

I sort of like what I made, if I say so myself. There are a few things I don't like, but overall, I guess it's okay. What do you think?

I apologize for failing in the WIP department. The HD failure sort of stalled my muse, and I'm currently trying to get her going again. At least I already c&p'ed the stabbed!Wilson WIP back onto my HD. Now I only need to continue it ;).

People, I need your help! Along with all my other data, I lost all the fic I formatted for squidge. For those of you who don't know, I'm planning on taking over the Squidge Archive and updating it to eFiction. Before I do that, I have to reformat all 1000+ fics that are archived there. I had 200 fics formatted already, but now I lost them. I'm asking for people who'd be willing to help me out :).

It's really not very complicated, just tedious and annoying. You should have all the tools you need on your computer - you need the editor, which you have if you're using Windows, and you need Microsoft Word XP. Open Office won't do, I tested that. If you don't have MW XP but still want to help me out, I can provide it.

Basically, I want all fics in a format like so: click

To get that, you need to go to the squidge quicksearch site and choose the fics sorted by title. You c&p the title, author and author's email into the header. Then you copy everything from Category to Date Posted and paste it beneath the header:

Then you open the story itself and click "View => Page Source" in your browser's menu (this is the Firefox menu. It might be called something else in IE or any other browser. You can also try Ctrl+U). You'll get the source code of the page. Now you need to c&p the source of the fic - only of the fic! - into Word.

If there is an AN, c&p it separately into your editor file below the header. Only c&p ANs. There's no need to save extra title, rating or genre listings or a disclaimer.

Now, when you've got the source in Word, there are a few things you need to replace. Hit Ctrl+H and replace:

1) all paragraphs by spaces. Type ^p into the Find field, and a space into the Replace field, and hit "replace all".

2) all double spaces by single spaces. Simply type a double space into "Find" and a single space into "Replace". Hit "replace all" multiple times until Word tells you that it hasn't found any double spaces any more (sometimes, there are ten or more spaces, and you need to replace 9 double spaces with a single space to reduce those ten spaces to one).

3) all <br><br> tags with <br><br>^p . This will give you a paragraph after each line break tag.

It's easiest if you follow this order - paragraphs, spaces, tags. This should work for most sourcecodes. Sometimes there are <p> tags or ASCII characters in the source. If you know how to strip the source of those tags and get it into the form of my example fic above, do so, if not, send me the link to the fic and I will do it myself.

As soon as you have stripped the code of all unnecessary tags and spaces, c&p it into your editor file. Then open the comment page of the fic you are working on and c&p those comments into the editor file beneath the fic sourcecode. Delete all the From: and Date: labels and get the comments into this format:

name_of_reviewer (email_of_reviewer) date/date/date
comment

If there is no email, just leave the brackets empty. C&p all comments, flames or positive feedback. Don't copy comments which are listed twice, or spam. If there's a line break in the comment, don't delete it, but insert a <br> tag, like so:

comment<br>
comment

Once you've done all that, save the editor file as author-title.txt .

This sounds like a whole lot of complicated work, but it isn't, really. It's easy. It's just annoying.

If you are willing to help me, please drop me an email or leave a comment. I will do all fics from A-C, and [livejournal.com profile] wihluta volunteered to do W-Z. Any other letters are still free.

If you help me, I will love you forever. Please? :)

ETA: [livejournal.com profile] rosettastone_d volunteered for D-F, [livejournal.com profile] neery volunteered for K-M, [livejournal.com profile] imagi_nation22 volunteered for G-H and [livejournal.com profile] earlwyn said she's game for anything I throw at her. All of you are wonderful people. When the new squidge page goes online at some point in the future, you will get a BIG VIRTUAL STATUE! :)
