Oh, Fandom! - Interview - Ficlet
Tonight, I did the interview I talked about in this post. I told the guy how awesome and open-minded fandom is, and then I went home and found the most narrow-minded, idiotic troll ever wanking all over Licia's journal.
Oh, fandom. Will you please behave and back me up in my claims? I'm trying to do my part to make you respectable!
Well. If you wanna know how the interview went, plz to be looking behind this
First of all, the guy told me that the broadcast itself probably won't be very exciting, because it'll be all of five minutes long - ten at the most. I was like, ehh, madman, you, a fanfic n00b, want to explain to a whole bunch of other fanfic n00bs what fanfiction is within ten minutes? Good luck with that... *gg*
Well, anyway. We sat down somewhere in some garden-y place, and first, he just probed a little - tried to find out what I knew and how SRS BZNS exactly I am about fandom. He'd talked to two HP writers just before he met up with me - German writers writing in German HP fandom; non-slashers, apparently.
So he started with telling me how baffled he was at finding all this FANDOM stuff behind the small simple concept of fanfiction. I told him about my encounters with fandom n00bs stumbling into the world of slash fanfiction (one especially fun example being someone reading one of my Smutty Sunday NC-17 PWP's apparently as their very first fanfic story EVER lol). Then I kept talking about how there are different styles of fandom - old style like House, new style like SGA - what it is that fascinates me about fandom, how I got into fandom in the first place, what fandom actually is etc etc.
I'd written him an email beforehand with the link to the Wiki article on slash, so I was spared the awkward explanation *gg*. He didn't ask a lot about slash, actually, at least not as long as the tape recorder wasn't running. But I really have to give it to him that he was extremely open-minded. He was genuinely interested and almost not freaked out at all by most of what I told him.
Well. Then, after about 15 minutes (yes, I did talk the ears off this guy, I admit it ^^), he got his tape recorder and this HUGE EVIL MIKE out. When I saw it, I did start to get a little nervous, but hey. No going back now ^^. He started again with the basics - how did you get into fandom, what is fanfiction, blah blah. Then he asked about why fanfiction is such an anonymous business - everybody not going by their real names, not giving any contact data and so on - and asked how I felt about telling people about my writing fanfic/slash. I told him I loved talking about it to open-minded non-fandom people who are actually interested in the topic, but avoided talking about it with people who just don't get it.
After that, he wanted me to talk about TEH SLASH. And there I was, looking at this big evil microphone and thinking, omg, he's gonna tape this and maybe broadcast this. My parents could hear this. Hell, my GRANDPARENTS could hear this. PANIC! So I stalled a bit and asked him whether this is where I start talking about the slash, and he was like, well, you can talk to me, I'm open-minded and interested. And I thought, yeah, you are, but all the people who will be listening to this? I'm not removed from reality enough to know that most people will go EWW as soon as they find out what slash is.
Well, I got past my moment of panic, though, and talking about slash was actually okay. I went on about TOS a little, and K/S as the first slash pairing ever, and then answered his inevitable question on "why pair same-sex characters?". He even asked about the phenomenon of the slash goggles - do you see slash everywhere you look as soon as you have seen it once? I think he liked the idea of the slash goggles ^^.
He also asked about bandslash and RPS, telling me about how he'd read an interview with the lead singer of Franz Ferdinand who thought that RPS about him was the most awesome thing ever. Well, can't say I'm surprised with Franz Ferdinand ;). It's awesome that he's cool with it, though, if you ask me.
Then he went through the usual stuff - why do you not write original fic? is fanfiction actually plagiarism? do you take pride in your writing or are you just in it for the lolz? is there something like good fanfiction/bad fanfiction? what would I have to do to become a fanfic writer? etc.
The only question I really didn't have an answer to was "why is it always women writing fanfic?" Because I really don't know. I know enough guys who are not stereotypes (and straight all the same) who could easily be fanfic writers, but they aren't. God knows why.
Well, I blabbed on for half an hour (that poor guy's ears must have HURT after the interview ^^), and then he turned his tape recorder off. We chatted some more, and he told me that he used to watch X-Files with his mom when he was a kid, and that she kept waiting for Mulder and Scully to get together, and that he didn't dig the chemistry. I was like - um, WUT?? I admit, it's not slash, but that pairing is so GLARINGLY OBVIOUS! Lol, well, didn't tell him that, because he was really nice and I didn't want to make fun of him. Instead, I told him about K/S and pon farr and how slash came to be ^^.
I think he was very fascinated. We might have gained a lurker *gg*. 0:1 for fandom.
I don't know when the thing is going to air. He said he'd text me about it. I'll be looking forward to hearing my garbled fandom meta on air, lol.
Last but not least, I wrote a tiny little comment ficlet today. Silliness and fluff. You can find it here.
