Review, Outlook & Fandom Meme
It's 2021! I don't know if it's going to be better or worse than 2020 (or the same), but it's a good opportunity to take a breath and gather some resolve.
Good things that happened in 2020:
* I moved into a house with
findmeinthealps and
neery, and it's working out really well.
* I'm quite satisfied with my fanworks output this year: six vids, two longfics, and three shorter fics. Total wordcount posted is 108k.
* I am so happy to have discovered c-drama. For the first time in years (pretty much since fandom moved to Tumblr), I feel like I'm actually participating in fandom, rather than circling it like a satellite failing to make connections.
* I watched Nirvana in Fire. That show is so incredible.
* I made a bunch of new friends in the c-drama and vidding community.
* Virtual cons have made it through the proof of concept phase with flying colors! Perhaps there will be more opportunities to attend cons in the future without having to pay for transatlantic flights.
Things I want to do differently in 2021:
* I'm really hoping to be able to get some more exercise. I used to bike to work, but with HO, that's not happening anymore. I have no innate drive to move around, it doesn't bring me any joy or satisfaction, but I'm noticing that the not moving much at all isn't good for me.
* Get my hair cut short. I've been wanting to do it for years, and there's a weird blockage in my brain about it, and it may be tangled up with some sort of gender thing, and I'm tired of dithering around, so as soon as hair dressers are open again, I'll be putting that on my near-future agenda.
* Travel. I miss it so much. They're going to take forever with the vaccine, so I'm not holding out too much hope, but ... I can't help holding out a little bit of hope. I was daydreaming about fucking airports the other day, as in "aw, remember Singapore airport, what a nice and relaxing place". /o\
Year in Fandom Meme, nabbed from
tinny
1. Your main fandom of the year?
Being multifannish, it's hard to point to just one fandom, but I think it's fair to say that c-drama took up a lot of my attention, particularly Nirvana in Fire, Guardian, and the Tomb Show.
2. Your favorite film watched this year?
I think it may have been Little Women, in fact. That's not a typical sort of movie, for me, but I loved the writing in it. That said, I didn't see many movies in 2020.
3. Your favorite book read this year?
Books? What are books? >_> I am reading an academic book about Fanvids right now, which I'm enjoying a lot.
4. Your favorite album or song to listen to this year?
No particular one, since I just tend to listen to my playlist of 500 random songs I've collected over the years on shuffle. I've been enjoying grandson and Franz Ferdinand, if that counts for anything.
5. Your favorite TV show of the year?
Nirvana in Fire. So good. I also really enjoyed the Tomb Show, which is less good, but covers every single trope I love with a vengeance.
6. Your favorite LJ community of the year?
I have not been on LJ in a very long time, and haven't been around on DW much. I'll list my favorite Discord server, which is the Watch Guardian server I joined a while back. It's quite small and very low-pressure on interaction, but very welcoming. I've been enjoying hanging out there on occasion.
7. Your best new fandom discovery of the year?
What's a fandom discovery? Can I just answer c-drama again?
8. Your biggest fandom disappointment of the year?
Uuuh ... I dunno, fandom's been pretty good to me this year. I guess I could list the complete trashfire of creator behavior that finalized my break-up with King Falls AM--it's not even worth getting into. That podcast was never good, but there were stretches when it was enjoyable enough due to trope-y-ness. The creators are a bunch of entitled manchildren, though, and they really can't write for shit. Someone told them about death of the author and they took it as a death threat; that's the level of idiocy they're operating on. In combination with the racism, homophobia, misogyny, and empty virtue signalling in their podcast, sometime early this year I finally managed to emotionally divorce this fandom. So that's really not a disappointment, more something I'm glad to be rid of. (Kept a few good friends from KFAM times, though, which pleases me. I am making one of them watch Guardian with me, muahahah.)
9. Your fandom boyfriend of the year?
I don't have one. I definitely don't occasionally go to the Bai Yu Thirst Blog to look at pictures of the prettiest man I've seen in years. Nuh-uh.
10. Your fandom girlfriend of the year?
I am not really that into Disco, but the more vids I see featuring Michelle Yeoh as Mirror Philippa, the more I want to see even more of her.
11. Your biggest squee moment of the year?
There were so many! The Nirvana in Fire finale. Watching the Tomb Show for shits and giggles only to get dragged into it and having at least five, maybe even eight emotions about it. Having a fandom with lots of high-quality medium-to-long fic where nobody is trying to arrest me for shipping non-canon ships. As I said, fandom's been pretty good to me this year.
12. The most missed of your old fandoms?
Hmm. I don't think I miss the TTOI fandom that much, because I never really managed to get into it (see above my inability to communicate on Tumblr), but I miss writing for TTOI. I was very good at it, and those characters really worked for me.
13. The fandom you haven't tried yet, but want to?
I kind of want to check out Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty. Also I would like to see some of the old Lost Tomb canon. And maybe the Ultimate Note show?
14. Your biggest fan anticipations for the New Year?
I want to write more fic, make more vids, talk to more people, and yell about Chinese TV shows.

He's just extremely pretty. Though I will say that I still struggle with no-facial-hair Bai Yu, because then he just looks 14. But especially his hair-and-beard situation post-ep 13 in Guardian really works for me. I don't blame Shen Wei at all.
NiF is my favourite TV show of all time
I was absolutely blown away the first time I saw it, and have since rewatched it a few times. The pacing, the characters, the acting, the direction, it's all absolutely stellar. Combined with the really well-structured and well-written story, it's probably one of the best TV shows I've ever seen. So, so good!

\o/ I am so happy for the three of you!
I am so happy to have discovered c-drama. For the first time in years (pretty much since fandom moved to Tumblr), I feel like I'm actually participating in fandom, rather than circling it like a satellite failing to make connections.
Yes! I am so happy for all of us, actually. :DD It's such a wonderful place, and the people are nice and creative, and enough of the fandom is happening here on dw where I feel at home and not lost in the sucking emptiness of twitter or tumblr. It's so great that you joined!
Virtual cons have made it through the proof of concept phase with flying colors! Perhaps there will be more opportunities to attend cons in the future without having to pay for transatlantic flights.
I chickened out because I've never been much of a con person. But it does sound like something I should try sometime.

Well... for all my cis-ness, I have always loved my short hair. Let me know when you get around to it? I def wanna see it, I'm sure it'll look great on you.
I am making one of them watch Guardian with me, muahahah.)
LOLOL, worth it.
Michelle Yeoh
Oh yeah, Michelle Yeoh is great. I should finally get around to watching Disco. At some point.
I want to write more fic, make more vids, talk to more people, and yell about Chinese TV shows.
Count me in! :D

Man, I hope we can actually hang out together at some point. It'd be so fun to have a c-drama evening! Soon, I hope.
the people are nice and creative, and enough of the fandom is happening here on dw
I'm just really enjoying being in a fandom where the main bulk of people have been in fandom for a while. Fandoms with a high influx of people who don't really know how fandom works (as in fandom the way I know it, LJ fandom) always develop these pockets of shit-stirrers who try to police everyone else. The bullying gets so bad, and you never know if you're talking to a normal person or a fandom cop until they suddenly flip their shit at you about something completely innocuous. Old-school fandom has its own issues, but at least it's not a minefield like that. I'm also discovering that I just don't have that much to talk about anymore with kids who are barely college-age ...
But it does sound like something I should try sometime
If cons seem daunting, online cons are maybe a good way to try them out? The admission fee is usually manageable, and nobody will be mad if you just lurk. So if you wanted, you could just hang out in the Discord and get a sense of the whole thing, and then interact only as much as you feel comfortable doing. The downside with online cons is of course the time zones. VidUKon is a UK con, so they're only an hour behind, but Fanworks was five hours, and that did lead to some late nights and odd hours.
Let me know when you get around to it
Will do! Not sure when that will be, I've been thinking about it for years at this point, but if I ever actually do it, I will let you know. xD
