End-of-Year Check-In & Vidding Round-Up
Hey hey, I hope everyone who celebrates end-of-year holidays had a good one!
Mine was quiet but decent. First year I got to have my own Christmas tree! We finally have space. :3 We didn't get around to buying lights before the lockdown, so we borrowed one string of lights from GF's grandmother and used another not-specifically-Christmas-one that we had lying around. The first has warm orange light, and the second a colder, blue light, which means we get an exciting two-level-effect on our tree. I don't actually hate it, though!
For next year, we need to get some filler ornaments. We have baubles, and a lot of big star-shaped ornaments that you can't hang too densely, but nothing to fill the gaps in between. This is no hardship; I'm quite looking forward to poking through Etsy (and maybe, if they manage to get the vaccine out till then, the 2021 Christmas markets).
I've been using my free time to work on my Sundial Exchange assignment. It'll be good if I manage to finish, but there's still a big chunk of work left to do, so we'll see. My recipient has a bunch of pretty good prompts, though, so even if I don't finish, I'm sure I can come up with something they'll like.
Everyone is doing their end-of-year fic round-up, but I still have two unrevealed Yuletides on the Archive, so I don't want to yet. I can do vidding, though! I'm not going to be posting any more vids in 2020. This also counts as my
starterpack side quest. I'm participating to try and get a little more active on here. I am also considering the Snowflake Challenge, though I'll have to see if two challenges at the same time work out for me.
Vid Round-up 2020
January
Fleabag - Personal Jesus (collab with
findmeinthealps)
April
Spider-Man: Far From Home - Roaring 20s
June
MCU Peter & Tony - You're Gonna Go Far, Kid
Good Omens - Bad Romance
October
Guardian - Tik Tok (collab with
findmeinthealps and
neery)
November
The Lost Tomb Reunion - Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go
Total: Six! There's one more that's finished, but it won't be published until January, so that's counting for 2021.
That is so many vids! I tend to average one vid per year, except for 2008, when I made five. Six is more than five! New personal record. I'm sure the cons I've been attending played a part, and also my ability to actually attend Fanworks, since it ran online.
Favorite video this year (of my own)
I think it may actually be Wake Me Up (Tomb Show). Perhaps this is because it's the most recent one and I'm still excited about it, but I also just really enjoy it? It's so silly, and I think it captures the show quite well. I've been told it's a great recruitment vid, so if you'd like to be recruited into a very ridiculous show about three idiots who are very bad at robbing tombs, go have a look.
Least favorite video
Hmmmmm. I want to say Tik Tok, not because the vid isn't great (it is; all my vids are great >_>), but because I feel like I could have contributed more. I didn't clip at all for it. I edited some chunks of timeline, and I did the color work, so I did do some things for it. But I could have contributed more.
Most successful video
I don't actually know! I find this extremely hard to answer? Tomb Show is a teeny tiny fandom, so of course the numbers are lower than for, say, Good Omens--but I also got more people directly contacting me about the Tomb Show vid than I did about the Good Omens one so *shrug*.
I guess Personal Jesus got quite a bit of attention (everyone loves a priest who fucks), and it's got the most hits on the Archive, so I'll go with that one.
Video most underappreciated by the universe, in my opinion
Another one I find hard to answer. When pressed, I'd probably say You're Gonna Go Far, Kid, just because I do quite like my editing in that one. But it's MCU, and MCU is a black hole that swallows fanworks. (I so prefer small fandoms to work in.)
Most fun video
Again, Wake Me Up. I didn't have to clip, I did it super-quickly in the hyper-obsession phase right after finishing the show, and rewatching it gives me warm fuzzies. Also it is genuinely quite funny. And also gay. Which are all good things.
Video with the single sexiest moment
Uuh. Personal Jesus, I guess? A priest who fucks is hard to surpass.
Biggest vid fail
The vid that I didn't make ;;. I have a Nirvana in Fire vid that I really want to make, but the show is so impossible to clip. I have a Vegas project file with over 1k clips for ep1-25, and at this point I feel like I need to clip my clips, and it's all a big mess. Did I mention that I hate clipping?
Hardest video to make
I kind of struggled with Roaring 20s, to be honest. The reason I wanted to make it in the first place is that I love action and movement vidding, which Spider-Man seems a predestined source for, but the editing in Far From Home is so fast that it's really hard to pull it apart and put it back together differently and still make it look good.
Most unintentionally telling video
I don't know, you tell me! Hmm. Probably the fact that I made two Spider-Man vids? Which are kind of about the same thing? Even though I claim not to care very much about the MCU? I couldn't say.
Things I learned this year
My vidding goals from last year
I didn't have any! I guess "make a vid"? That's worked out.
Goals for 2021
I really dislike making goals, but I will state this one goal: in 2021, I will finish and publish a Nirvana in Fire vid. Here, I said it, now I have to do it.

Things I learned this year
- A clip can be longer than 18 frames.
- Collaborating is great, because whenever you feel stuck, you hand the file off and suddenly a new chunk of timeline appears.
- If I stick my vid into the Llama Encoder after rendering, it's a much more manageable file size.
- Clipping sucks even more than I remembered.
- C-drama is very vidable except for how their shows are long and require lots of clipping.
- Clipping with smart bins is marginally less annoying than clipping to the timeline, but it's still clipping.
- I still don't understand how POV is employed in vidding.
- I either make vids very fast or very slow, there is no in-between.
- Aspect ratios are stupid (I knew that, but they're getting even more stupid.)
