AIM privacy fail

I noticed this a few weeks ago, but have not posted about it until now . . . because I didn't think about it? Sorry. :| Anyway, AIM is being faily.

The latest mandatory AIM update included the option for users to add their full name to their screen name. If AIM already had your full name, they will have opted you in on this wonderful option, which means that your full name will have been appearing on people's AIM contact lists.

I don't think there's anyone on my contact list whose real name I was able to see, or I would have IMed you. So don't worry too much, if you're on my list. <3

To opt out of this option, go here, uncheck the box that says "Allow people to see my full name and find me in search results", delete everything in the first name/last name fields [ETA: This is important; apparently, if the fields aren't blank, it won't let you submit.], and hit submit. Changes will take up to 72 hours to come into effect.

Uh, yes. Spread the word?

On a fun note, if you have NO first & last name entered, like me, that page won't let you save and GTFO without entering them first. :-/

I think I'll just close that tab and pretend I'd forgotten my AIM account even existed again.

Really? It didn't do that to me. I had nothing in there; it just said "First Name" and "Last Name". Which I deleted before I unchecked the box and submitted. Worked for me. How did you go about it?

...I didn't delete those, unchecked the box, and tried to submit. I mean, I'm fine with those appearing as my contact info, figured why mess with what wasn't broken, right? Stupid thing should've let me save the unchecked box, at least.

Aaah, yes. It's probably a bug in the script; wouldn't surprise me. Silly AIM. It does work if you make sure the two input boxes are blank. I might add a line about that to the entry, to avoid confusion.
