As I said in a comment above, I actually think that back then, the Doctor got married for political reasons. But then, that's personal fanon, so I don't have anything to back it up.

Heh, substitute-sexual works. And huh, I never thought about it that way--that they might have denied their feelings for one another. At least not during their Academy years. I always thought that came later, after their falling out, when they both got hurt badly by the other and just couldn't admit that they may have been wrong about stuff.
