A call to all vidders

Hello, vidders on the f-list--teach me your wisdom?

I spent three hours last night installing Sony Vegas on my desktop, because I want to make a vid that's been bugging me for ages. Every time I make a vid, though, I end up unhappy with what I come up with. It's not only not what I had in my head, it's not even an acceptable alternative. So I figured this time, I'd ask the internet for help.

How do you vid? Do you have imported, broken-down clips of the episodes in your media manager, or do you import only what you need? Do you storyboard your vid, or do you just go with your instinct and throw together what looks good? Do you match the images and the lyrics? Do you match the images and the music? Do you vid chronologically? Which transition do you use to gain which effect? What about effects/cropping/speeding up or slowing down a clip? In which format do you render your vids? Go on, vidders, tell me all your secrets. :D

Personally, I always want to set up a proper clip library, but I'm too disorganized for that. So I usually end up either despairing going through four seasons of footage, or making episodic vids. (Doctor/Master is great that way--only three episodes to work with, wooh.) I vid chronologically--usually, although I'm considering trying not doing that with my next vid--but I don't storyboard. Sometimes, I scribble down ideas, but the notes are usually either illegible, or I end up changing my whole concept four times anyway.

I try to match my images to the music. Sometimes I match them to the lyrics as well, but I'm finding that it's not all that necessary, usually. Often enough, it makes the vid better if lyrics and images don't match in a straightforward way.

I'm fond of the simple cut, although dissolves work quite well for slow transitions. I also like the effect of a quick color transition over white--it makes it look as if something is exploding. I don't usually use many effects, except fiddling with the color and lighting--not too much when I'm vidding Who, because I'm quite fond of the lighting used on that show. I like vids that have a gritty, dark look to them, so I frequently reduce saturation. I sometimes slow down clips to make them fit better, and sometimes speed them up if I want a fast, hectic effect--no people, though. People just look goofy sped up, and I've never needed that effect. I crop, but not too much, because if you're working with normal TV rips, too much cropping gives you pixelated images. Cropping for me is always a bit of a lesser evil thing.

I usually render the vids twice; once in the ginormous uncompressed shiny format, and then again in a DivX compression that will let me upload it to the 'nets. Which means I usually get .avi files. Sometimes I put it through another video compression prog to get a .wmv, if I need it even smaller. I try not to compress the audio further than 128 Kbit/s, but Vegas can be weird that way and sometimes gives me 56. B|

So... that's all I can think of. If you have any tutorials for vidding with Sony Vegas 8.0, I'd appreciate a link enormously. I want to finally figure out how to vid so I can be happy with what I come up with. >_>
