For some reason I ended up seeking out songs I used to listen to as a kid on youTube. Great hilarity followed. Jesus, I had no taste as a kid.

The three highlights. Because, you know. Hilarity.

Blue - Eiffel 65

Okay, so I'm guessing most people know this one. It was released in '99, which would have made me thirteen years old. I wasn't the electronic music type at all, but this song's just catchy. Now, it mostly makes me laugh because it's so the Doctor. Everything he sees is blue, he lives in a blue house, even his suit is blue. His damn Vespa is blue. 'Cause he ain't got nobody to listen.

Join Me In Death - Him

Him's first hit. Also released in '99 - it must have been the year of bad song releases. You need to watch this and revel in the unadulterated emo that they so innocently displayed back then. It's hilarious. Also, I love how the lyrics don't fit the metric at all. 'Our lives have just bee-gun.' Oh yes.

If you make it to the end, pay attention to the little *gasp* he does. He's all, 'Baby, join me in deeeaaaath' - *gasp*. It's hilarious.

Fell In Love With An Alien - The Kelly Family

In my defense, I must point out that this song was released in 1996, and I was therefore an innocent 10-year-old girl who just didn't know any better. And even back then, I thought it was kind of a silly song - but I had a friend who had wallpapered her room in Kelly Family posters, and was in love with Paddy, so their music kinda seeped into my play list. Their songs are damn catchy, if nothing else. I still get this one in my head from time to time.

It's a gem. The alien, and the kid who falls in love with her, and the terrible countryside setting and the fact that he ends up spawning a huge family with her. (He's such a Sue. ;) )


So what are your most embarrassing secrets when it comes to what you listened to as a (pre-)teenager?


Summary of other more or less interesting things:

- If my icon confuses you, you are missing out. Their love is epic.

- I want this. Yes. Please. Master. This pastede-on hat shouldn't look so sexy.

- I watched The Devil's Whore, and apart from the Devil, who was just badly done, it's quite awesome. I burst out laughing every time someone called Simm Sexby, though. Why yes, I am five. Also, Sexby is so the Master. Such a hard-on for war, I was waiting for him to go tapping his fingers: da-da-da-dun. The main character is quite awesome as well, I like her a lot. Will watch again. (Oh, and and, most important: Guh.)

AND LOOK. SIMMY SIMM HAS A TAG NOW. I hope he knows what a privilege that is. So far, only the David has had an individual tag on this journal.

Oh god I couldn't see anything BECAUSE OF ALL THE SLASH. What exactly was the plot of the episode? The only thing I keep coming up with is "the epicness of Arthur's and Merlin's love". What with all the touching? AND STICKING HIS TOES INTO MERLIN'S MOUTH? What, what? Someone at the BBC must have figured out how much money they could make off slasher fangirls.

Hee, yeah, Blue is a terrible song, but it's so catchy that everybody likes it anyway. xD

Him I avoided like the plague -- well anything emo and sold at Hot Topic I kind of avoided. But the Kelly Family? I don't know who they are, and I've decided I don't want to. OMG that was terrible! They are Ren Faire rejects! Sorry, but yeah.

Of course I should talk, my "teen" hit list would include Adam Ant, Bow Wow Wow, and...yeah...Billy Joel. (NOT Madonna, though. I have my limits.)

And Simm? I have to say, the older he gets, the more I like him. I can't wait until I get to see Devil's Whore (which cannot be shortened to "DW" I just realized, because, duh...tDW maybe? *scratches head*). nom nom nom.

The Kellies are some sort of Irish-y folk band who got famous more or less by accident. When I was little - around 10-12 - they were huge in Germany. I always thought they were a little silly, but everybody was listening to them, and it helped that I didn't understand the lyrics xD.

John Simm is awesome. He always plays these utterly insane and awesome characters, and he does it so well. I really want him back on DW. :D

Hey, I listened to the Kellys even BEFORE they were famous. They used to play Christmas songs on the Town Centre Square. I have LPs to prove it. LOL

Ok, I feel old... pre-teen, embarrassing musical taste...

OMG, I feel *so darn old* right now. The Kelly's were when I was in highschool, and 'Blue' came out when I was already off to the pre-Uni year (only makes sense in my neck of the woods)... and Him, gosh, highschool and the early years of Uni were filled with these things. I half-expect you now to mention Smashing Pumpkins so I can admit with a long-ago remembered sneer that back when that was hot in high school I was too anti-trendy to listen to bands that ripped off the oldie-but-goodies...

For me, I grew up on my father's vinyls (The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkle, ABBA, two Muppet albums -shuttup, they still rock- and Bonny M.) and later Disney cartoon-musicals (which I taped off the TV with clever use of earphones cables and lots of stubborness)... but when I was a kid I liked early '80s now-ex-YU pop bands as well as YU pop-folk, a fact I will never forgive myself for (but drat it all, I was a *kid*, it's supposed to be OK to be stupid at that age). The came pop-rock, rock (not hard rock, though - ick), then nu-metal then ska and punk (yay!) and all permutations of ska-punk-rock with a side-order of the occasional hardcore live show... but musicals have remained a fave of mine, as well as the oldie-but-goodies.

Smashing Pumpkins? Idk, no-one ever mentioned them during the time I was paying attention to these things, but then, I don't think they were ever that big in Germany - because I basically know no-one German who loves them, lol.

Well, you know, I actually did that too, grow up on my dad's taste in music - except that he mostly had tapes instead of vinyl. When I finished elementary school at the age of 8/9, I was listening to Eric Clapton and Manfred Mann's Earth Band. I kept listening to these things all throughout my teenagehood, too, but I guess picking up other musical tastes was a sort of ...rebellion? Look at me, being so very controversial. After the temporary madness of Him and the Kellies, I quickly latched onto Bon Jovi (shut up, at least he can sing), and then, by the age of 14/15, I'd turned into a huge Aerosmith fan (so tell me, what's wrong with hard rock, hmm?). By now, I'm into all sorts of stuff, including In Flames and Korn as well as Evanescence (shut up, she can sing as well). The funny thing? The friend who used to worship the Kellies is now into hard-core black metal xD.

Hey, Aerosmith is good, but not *hard* rock, at least not according to my very dubious musical tastes. Bovi, on the other hand... I borrowed an album of his from a friend in the mid/late '90s, and it was all harsh guitar sounds and not enough background like in the music videos, so I said no to pure rock or whatever his kind that's not pop-rock is called then and there. :-p But soon after I got my hands on the Matrix (1) soundtrack, and boy, did some songs from there take getting used too...

Heh, Korn was back in the late '90s for me before nu metal really hit the scene - such as it was - in our parts. The year 2000 I spent listening to Slipknot's self titled album almost exclusively... well, that and a bunch of much mellower stuff - I got my hands on The Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack that same year, so yeah, my taste, very eclectic.

But, well, at least neither of us has Britney Spears *shudders* or some boy bands in our pasts. (I did discover a liking for "East 17" after they all but went out of the spotlight, but one CD doesn't count, right? ...<.<...>.>... ) And, oooh, German music just reminded me of the disco dance music years - DJ Bobo! *g* ...What? Like I'm the only barely-teen who thought that once upon a time that disco dance was the best thing evar. _{ETA: Let's just pretend I didn't make that slip, OK? *headdesk*}

Bon Jovi is more hard rock than Aerosmith? That's... news to me. Lol, but yeah, I do agree that Aerosmith is better than Bon Jovi. ;)

I'm generally not a huge friend of rock that's too poppy. And I'm not fond of rock getting to electronic/synthesized either. What can I say, I'm difficult ;). Nu Metal and Alternative is alright - I'm kinda fond of early Korn and some Marilyn Manson, and Incubus is not all bad - but Slipknot... meh. I prefer Stone Sour, lol. I also like some Black and Death Metal, as long as it's not too hard core - In Flames is alright, so is Opeth. I've got some Indie in my play list as well, but most Indie, especially the newer stuff, is just boring. I'm not sure where to fit in the Chili Peppers and Tool, so those two are getting a separate mention, because I love them both a lot. Fandom has kind of ruined my taste in music, though, which is how things like Cobra Starship's Snakes on a Plane has found its way into my music folder ;).

Wow, oops. Went a little tl;dr there. Sorry. And no, no boy bands for me, and no blonde chick pop singers either. I have a Celine Dion album, but it was given to me. (Honest.) And oh, yeah, I have one Eminem album, although I'm absolutely not into rap and hip-hop. I'm not sure what I was thinking when I bought it, but I still do like to listen to it from time to time. (Mostly when I hate the world and feel like I want to kill people.)

Oh god, DJ Bobo. *shudders* What I remember of that era/genre is Mr President's Coco Jambo. I was thirteen, and the song was awesome. Back then. Watching the vid now, I should probably have put it into my post. ;)

Coco Jambo. *giggles* Now imagine being a few years older and having a whole *album* of stuff like that - CD, even. (I had a first cousin who was wanting to be a DJ back then, so Depeche Mode and then-techno blending into dance was all we got recced by his older and then-cooler self. I still like Depeche Mode, but will never ever appreciate the "wonders" of deep bass or base or whatever -also a kind of techno, apparently.)

Hey, talking old music with you is fun! (But not Slipknot? Srsly? I was never into metal - the guitar solos get a bit repetitive - but Eminem, him I liked. Enough to never buy an album, and then years later be disappointed by 8 Mile's soundtrack. Ugh. But I do have the flick burnt to DVD somewhere, and I might just rewatch the final rapping show-offing, because oldschool rap like that is cool. ...I'll stop with this before I end up admitting that I lived and breathed for "Jem" when I was 7 years old - and if there ever was any pop-y-er rock than Jem's soundtrack, it was probably another cartoon aimed at pre-teen girls as well. *hides*)
