And it's not like the default comment page is hideously ugly
Hey, I think it's absolutely swell, considering everything else that can be mocked about lj. (I'm guilty of having mine on custom but only because it's the simplest layout there is and the fonts should be pretty basic on any browser - though I've seen the sizes sometimes change even on my own for no reason. @#$%^& lj @#$% )
Well, you've got, like, the most basic of basic layouts, lol, so having the custom comment page turned off wouldn't really make a lot of a difference. I was more talking about people who either have a really pretty layout that's completely illegible, or a customized standard layout - usually Flexible Squares - which they've either set to clashing colors or to colors that are just really hard on the eye if you're trying to actually read what's in the journal.
Random font size changes. Oh how I hate those. There should be a lock-down on the internet that doesn't allow anyone to use anything but 10pt default plus varying percentages thereof. Nghn.

Word. Also, any and all fonts used for actual text that is longer than, say, 50 characters, should be either in the Serif or Times family. I can stomach Arial, but some of the other fonts newbie bloggers seem to be so keen on? My eyes, my eyes!
I do have a fondness for Trebuchet MS, but that sans-serif, so it's not too fancy. Other than that, I use Verdana or Arial. Sometimes Georgia, although only if it really fits with the layout. I have a distinct dislike for Times New Roman and will only use it on request in layouts I'm writing for other people. ;)
Using anything else is silly anyway. You could use Courier or Tahoma as well, but who would want to? Anything else is not guaranteed to be installed on every computer, and your pretty layout that you've coded completely in BeneventoTM shows up in boring old TNR for 9 out of 10 people.
