Heroes

I spent yesterday night watching series with [livejournal.com profile] neery, and we got into a discussion about Dean from SPN - about what he is, what he wants. We realized that even though we've both seen the complete series, we have very different views of his character.
Long story short, it made me think - what kind of series heroes appeal to me?

I'm obviously into the self-sacrificing type. Self-sacrificing, insecure and oblivious to their own value.

SPN: Dean's my favorite. He'd do anything for his brother, he lives to protect his brother and his family. He has no other life. Pretty self-sacrificing...

Star Trek Enterprise: Malcolm. Inferiority complex and all. Remember "Minefield", anyone?

X-Files: Mulder. This one's harder. But he does sacrfice himself for the truth. Besides, there's the issue of no other interesting characters sticking with the series for the whole nine seasons. Except for the CSM, but he's more in the category of "My Villains" than "My Heroes".

Stargate SG-1: Daniel. He even comes back from the dead just so he can sacrifice himself all over again.

Stargate Atlantis: Rodney. Okay, he's tough. But I think I can make him fit the pattern. He's a good person. He wouldn't hurt anyone on purpose, he's not mean, except if people are being stupid, and even then, he's kinda nice about being mean. And he does have a self-sacrificing streak a mile wide. "Oblivious to his own value" - well, not really. After all, this is Rodney we're talking about. But would he be so quick to point out his many talents all the time if he were secure about them? He needs to point them out to reassure himself of his value. So, he's kinda oblivious to what he's really worth.

House MD: Wilson. He's just so nice. Due to the nature of the series, I haven't really seen him in a life-and-death situation that would give him the chance of sacrificing himself (I've only seen the 1st season so far), but I remember the episode in which he got himself sacked out of loyalty to House. And he's obviously insecure - how often was he married? Three times?

That's it, I guess. I really seem to go for similar characters in each series. People I can get protective of (and yeah, I know, at this point at the latest some small voice in my head should scream something about "reality check!", but I stopped listening to that little guy a long time ago...)

So, what's your superhero type?

Our views of Dean weren't really all that different, were they? It was mostly Sam and his total awesomeness / annoyingness (delete as appropriate) we disagreed on, IIRC. Dean, we both love madly.

I'm totally into the "Self-sacrificing, insecure and oblivious to their own value" type of heroes, too - hell, the fact that Dean fits my usual favorite type of heroes 245% is a huge part of the reason why I love the show so very, very much.
