Wonders never cease

I just found out that I got a guy hooked on fanfiction! Well, maybe "hooked" is the wrong word, but he does occasionally read fanfic. I've never met a male fanfic reader - I've heard of one or two, but statistically speaking, there's no such thing as a fanfic liker with a Y chromosome. Woohoo! I didn't even do it on purpose. I just... talked and talked and talked about it. Since it's my hobby. (Hey, I have to listen to him talk about AD&D and Civilization to no end!)

You might have a hard time believing this, but I actually know a couple of guys who have written fic as well. Granted, it was for Robin of Sherwood (a fandom that has a lot of RPG and seems to attract guys) and the stories were genfic, but still...

For the most part, I think it's pretty rare to find someone with a Y chormosome reading fic. Well, willingly, anyway. In the past, I've forced my poor brother to read some of my stories. Luckily for him, I started writing slash. You see, I've kind of made it a rule that anyone related to me shouldn't be reading my slash, especially if they're my brother. *g*

Anywaaaaay, it's cool that you got a guy hooked on fanfic. I hope he'll stick with it. I have to say that it must be challenging for guys to find fic they'll like considering the number of slash stories out there. Even within the gen genre, there are a disturbing number of het stories. Someone really needs to come up with some kind of "guy recs" page.

Okay, I hope you'll forgive me for saying this, but is there a possibility that the guy in question is gay? I mean, the only guy I know who reads slash is gay, though I suppose there are straight guys who read F/F slash. Maybe the, er, more graphic scenes just don't bother your friend or he scrolls past them? He does prefer an accompanying plot, so it's obviously about more than just sex or he'd only be reading PWP. Hmmm...

Does he know what your writing pseudonym is or are you just afraid he might stumble across one of your stories when you start writing SGA slash? I can understand your fears because I know I'd prefer to keep my slash-writing a secret from, oh, most of the people I know. *g* Well, hopefully things will work out. If worse comes to worse, maybe you can explain to him that you don't feel comfortable about a guy reading your slash. I'm sure he'd understand, especially as there's no shortage of SGA fic out there.

Well, that's very enlightened of him. I don't know if I've come across any straight guys who would be willing to read slash -- beyond the ones with a sense of curiosity. *g*

I know what you mean about your friends knowing you write slash and your friends actually reading your slash. There is a distinction. With the friends who read and/or write fic, and are fellow geeks themselves, it doesn't bother me. However, I know some people who would probably be horrified at the notion of me reading slash, never mind writing it. Unfortunately, people can be hopelessly narrow-minded about these things.

It's great that you're getting your friend into SGA vids. You may have come across these ones already, but here are some of my favourites:

Four ways to defeat the Wraith through good health (parts 1 & 2) (http://zoetrope.livejournal.com/120721.html)

Apocalypse Please (http://www.pertifity.com/vids.htm#sga)

(Unfortunately, I don't have direct links for these last two vids, but the links I'm providing will take you to the SGA vid section of pertifity.com. Then it's just a matter of scrolling down to the vids in question.)
