Rating Poll

In this post I mentioned the idea of a rating poll, which would give LJ user the possibility to click ticky boxes instead of leaving a comment.

Basically, I'd put a poll at the bottom of my fic entry with four or five rating options - from 'Hated the fic!' to 'Loved it more than I love my mom!' or something - so all readers would have to do to leave feedback is click one of the radio buttons. Of course, if people have got something more to say, they can still leave comments.

[Poll #1143506]

ETA: I used radio buttons because thinking about the statistics of the multiple-answers-are-possible poll version makes my head hurt. If you can't really decide which answers to choose, leave me a comment telling me what you think! :)

YOUR POLL IS VERY HARD TO ANSWER. BECAUSE I HAVE MIXED THOUGHTS ON THE WHOLE THING AND RADIAL BUTTONS SIGNIFICANTLY NARROW MY OPTIONS AND FURTHER MY INDECISIVENESS.

OKAY, SO I BASICALLY THINK:

it's a good idea, just for the purpose of giving those actually TOO LAZY to leave even a three word 'this is good' comment, an easier/lazier option to comment. though, some people probably would view this kind of poll thing as attention whoring. i personally don't think it's attention whoring - it's giving people an easier option if they're just too lazy to comment. but other people would see it differently, perhaps.

thussss, some people might feel discouraged to leave any feedback at all if they think it's attention whoring. then again, those who don't may very well use the poll - but would you be satisfied with that? like, while people would have the option of leaving a comment, they likely wouldn't because "OH, WELL, I'LL JUST FILL OUT THE POLL BC IT'S EASIER". so would you be satisfied with knowing just how lazy people are with leaving feedback/potentially getting even less actual feedback?

for me... if i read a fic that had a poll system at the end, i would likely do what i always do - if a fic has kept me interested/if i liked it/if i absolutely despised it/if i know and trust the author and read them regularly, i will leave feedback. otherwise, if a fic is mediocre, doesn't really do anything for me, doesn't sustain my interest, doesn't really move me in any way, i generally don't comment because i usually have nothing to say in those instances. so, would i use the poll in a case like that? maybe. then again, i watch a lot of youtube videos and never opt to rate them. so, it's hard to say.

HAS THIS BEEN ANY HELP? I FEEL LIKE I'VE JUST RAMBLED FOR AGES ABOUT NOTHING (mainly bc it's 3AM here and i am tiiiiired)

I'm sort of with Ticcy on this in that I have mixed thoughts and your poll made it difficult to express my opinion. BUT I SUCKED IT UP LIKE A BIG GIRL AND CHOSE ANSWERS. And then thought I'd leave a comment to clarify.

I like the premise of a poll system. I've toyed with the idea adding some sort of visitor ticker to each of my fic pages, just to see how many people read them and (I broadly assume) relatively enjoy them. To me, that's the big thing, just to know people read. If they leave feedback, that's icing on the cake. A poll, I think, would be more able to show how many people at least checked out something I wrote, but when it comes to feedback itself -- I don't know. Maybe I have high expectations but the thing I like with feedback is that someone will take the time to post their emotional response, or say what worked or what didn't. I mean, I like concrit. I like the dorky jokes left in comments or even just 'Oh, House' (or whatever character I'm writing). I like the communication aspect to feedback and a poll sort of undermines that.

So why I like the idea of a poll, I guess I'd want the ability to turn it off or on, depending on my mood and the fic. That way, I can encourage a dialogue to happen if I want that or I can leave it as people saying whether they read/enjoyed or not.

I think it's a good idea, and people still always have the choice to comment or not, right??
