The Reason Why House Is Better Than Any Other Show I've Ever Watched
Okay, came down from my peevy family rant-trip enough to do this post now ^^. (Hugs go to all the lovely people on my flist who commented. I love you guys, you know that, right? :) ).
I've watched a lot of shows. ST:ENT, all of it, SG-1, most of it, SGA, X-Files, SPN, everything of ER up to mid-season 13, a lot of Starsky & Hutch, a bit of Due South, one or two eps of Queer as Folk, and I've even watched a bit of BSG before I decided that the tall blond woman was just too creepy and weird. All those shows had some seriously cool episodes, and some even offered wonderful HoYay moments and pairings. I've loved them all dearly. However, none of them were able to trigger endorphin-rushs and incoherent squeeing like last (this? I'm confused) night's House did.
Why is that?
Possible spoilers up to 3x21 behind the cut
Well, first of all, there's the actors. Not Jesse Spencer or Omar Epps. But HL and RSL, who just happen to be the guys playing the two characters I'm interested in in that show, are both such great actors! You don't often get it that both of your OTP are displayed by awesome actors.
Then, there's the humor. No surprise, really, with a comedian in the part of the main character. Even the worst House episodes contain at least one line or shot that has me rolling around on the floor.
Then, the Sherlock Holmes parallels. I LOVE SHERLOCK HOLMES! As in first crush and everything. Those short stories ruled a couple of years of my life as a pre-teenager. (Random fact: did you know that the Kingmeister himself wrote Sherlock Holmes fanfiction? *squees*)
Then, there's the setting. While I love science fiction, I've always had a soft spot for doctor shows - hence the many seasons of ER. My problem with doctor shows is that they're not big on the slash. Take ER - the only slash pairings I ever saw in that show were Carter/Benton and Marc/Doug. Don't kill me for that one. I already had a near-death experience when I told a hard-core ER fan about this ship-idea.
Well, with House, there's slash in spades, and fun medicine (even though you can't compare the medicine in House with the medicine in ER. That would be like comparing German "peanut butter" with the real American thing, and House is not the real thing in this comparision ^^).
And then, last, but absolutely not least, is House one of the few shows that seem to have some kind of perception of what the fans want. And I'm not talking about the 14-year-old HAM fangirls. House is one of the slashiest shows ever, and TPTB actually seem to be aware of the fact that if they don't keep up the HoYay, they'll lose a not unsubstantional part of their fans. Of course, they will never give us what we want - if that's even what we want at all, see countless meta discussions for reference - but who wants on-screen slash if they can have a slow-motion shot of House and Wilson and Flames!Cane walking down the hallway to the soundtrack of AC/DC's Highway To Hell?
But what with the Tritter arc, you ask. Yeah, well, nobody's perfect. But in retrospect, the fact that this show recovered from the Tritter arc is just more proof of how many kinds of awesome exactly it is. Who of you guys did seriously believe that we would get a return of the HoYay? I didn't. I was hoping and praying and trying to ignore the evidence, but deep down, I knew the HoYay was gone from House, killed off by TPTB in the same way the PTB of so many other shows killed off the HoYay in those shows.
But then there was Top Secret and then Act Your Age, and it was very much like watching the recovery of one of House's patients: you know that this is so not how it works in real life, but you can't help but marvel, anyway. The only difference being that this was real life.
*stretch of awed silence*
In conclusion, House MD is teh awessommee, yes? ^^
