The Hungry Earth
I went into this expecting the worst, because Chris Chibnall, the writer of this episode, is the person responsible for butchering Torchwood season 1 and 2, and he did 42, which is one of my least favorite Ten episodes. In that sense, I was positively surprised.
The Hungry Earth, just like 42, didn't really feel like a Doctor Who episode. Chibnall always does plots that connect to the real world in a very tangible way, which is what Doctor Who usually doesn't do, so much. The Doctor goes to Venice and chases vampires, he meets Daleks in the streets of London--but he doesn't end up in plots like this one, usually. This feels more like X-Files than Doctor Who. Not that I mind, so much; I love the X-Files. It does take a bit of getting used to, though.
That said, I thought it was reasonably enjoyable. No major gaping plot holes, and we got some nice character moments. I do like the kid; he quoted Sherlock Holmes, what's not to like? I thought that everyone was a bit quick to accept the Doctor as a leading figure--especially the woman with the complicated Indian name; she went gooey-eyed over the Doctor just a tad too quickly. I like that the Doctor fucked up, not only once, but twice, by losing Amy and the kid.
I didn't like the warrior reptile woman. Sigh, warrior women, why do you always have to be so cliché? I didn't like how extremely inactive Amy was in this one, but the fact that there were other characters around, some of whom were women, made up for that.
Well, we'll see how next week goes.
