Sorry thought I had commented on this when I read it the first time and have realised I did not.
There is lots of really good stuff here and it was a fascinating and involving read from start to finish.
Like Mikey I was a little unsure about Gene leaving the man to be beaten up but you make the reasons why very plausible and, as you say, we know that he thought he was only being beaten up and nothing worse. So it fits quite well with early Gene the one still struggling to be a good man again despite the system he is embroiled in.
Your depiction of Sam was excellent in my opinion - he was opinionated, challenging, slightly arrogant, despairing of his situation and the scenes with the TCG were spot on.
And of course anything that gets the boys together is good in my book.
