Stargate
Whoa what happened? LJ changed to a javascript editor huh? They're like an airborne virus, those editors - hate 'em.
Okay, the reason why I'm posting today... I've gone and done it. I got myself hooked on SGA. I've joined the dark side. I've managed to watch all of Season 1 and 2 in the last few days, plus half of Season 3, and I'm waiting for 3x10-15 right now.
When I started watching it, I anticipated that I would like it. I mean, McKay sounded like an interesting enough character to put up with the rest of the characters and the whole Stargate canon problem (I've never watched any Stargate, and when they get all exited about the Atlantis address in the pilot, I needed
neery to tell me that usually, there are only six of those symbols...). But then I started to get into it, and I actually like all the characters... which has never happened to me before with a series. X-Files, I always thought Kirsch was kind of unnecessary; ER, I hated Susan Lois (don't even remember how to spell her name); TOS, I never knew what to do with Scotty; ENT, well, Mayweather is just boring... but with SGA, they're all kind of interesting. Of course there are characters that are less interesting than the others, like Weir, for example (please forgive me if I spell any of those people wrong, I've only got to know them per series so far), and I think SGA still needs to work a little on their way of closing episodes ("Grace Under Pressure" - one less shot with McKay and that woman, and one more shot in the end with McKay in sickbay - sorry, infirmary - telling everyone how he was that close to implemeting a brilliant plan to get himself out of the ocean). But still, that series really is a damn good one. Slightly unrealistic from time to time - and about halfway through Season 2 I grew a little tired of those scenes in which one of the team is just that close to being fed on by the Wraith and is saved just a second before the Wraith puts his hand on their chest - but I like the way the heroes aren't always as great and good as it is with many other series (and I'm not talking only about Star Trek here). That one scene when Sheppard simply goes and shoots a defenseless, wounded prisoner... and the whole Michael thing. I hope they will go into this moral/ethics thing a bit more. Because I think there's a lot of potential in that.
What I don't see much of in that series is Slash. There's loads of Het, but Slash... not really. That's never stopped anyone, I know, but still... from the huge slasher fandom, I thought there would be more of it in there. Especially more McShep. I have to admit, I see more McKay/Carson than McKay/Sheppard. If Sheppard, then Ronan/Sheppard. But Ronan is so obviously in love with T'eyla (still haven't forgiven her that she stole my name. If I had to point out one of the team that I don't like, it'd be her I think) that I don't see much chance for poor Johnny. There's a lot of Sheppard/Weir in there. Ah well, I will have to go and see what the fandom did with the characters. After all, who cares what the series says? ;)
Can't quite ignore my guilty conscience, though. After all, what I'm doing right now is jumping ship the way all the other ENT authors did. Not that I blame them, after the way ENT was slaughtered by the powers that be. And I do intend to stick with ENT. But I can't fight the plot bunnies that are wriggling their SGA-noses. I guess I could write in two different fandoms. I've never done it before, though. And I know at least one person who is going to be soo mad at me if I convert to SGA.
*sigh* ...the hard life of a fanfic author ;).
