I think the reason it didn't sit well with me at all was partly that I hate Moffat's tendency to pair the Doctor up with two-dimensional stereotypical female characters, tell a twu wuv story and then kill the female character off in good old Hollywood blockbuster tradition. I've always liked the mythology of the Time Lord names, and I wanted him to keep his hands off it. >_>
Yeah, I know, disliking Four isn't exactly a popular fannish opinion, but I can't help it. Of all the Doctors, he's the most self-righteous--he does things not because he thinks he's right, he does them because he knows he's right. That's a major turn-off for me--especially since I find that with most Doctors, the fact that they know that they're acting entirely based on their own choices is what makes the character so interesting. With Four, that gets sort of lost, since he actually does believe in inherent rights and wrongs, and usually considers himself to be right. Which I find very infuriating.
Heh, I've always been meaning to watch some Two, just for the sake of completion. He definitely was a whole lot of fun in The Five Doctors, with his constant bantering with the Brig. Of the Doctors I've seen, my favorites tend to be later Doctors, though--Ten (I've thought about this, whether this is just because he's "my" Doctor, but I do like him best for other reasons as well), and Seven. I adore Seven, especially with Ace.
I've never been very canon-obsessed, but especially with a canon like Who, it helps to see what's there before you go and make up your own stuff. You can still make up your own stuff, after all, if you don't agree with the existing canon, but at least then you'll know to label your fic AU. ;)
